Jan and Prof. Ian Smith

Professor Ian Smith with Jan Rutter, CEO/Founder, CBN

I first met the Prof. back in 2001 when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. He so inspired me with his optimism and enthusiasm and of course that wonderful smile, that I had absolutely no doubt that I was going to beat my cancer with his help and that of his excellent team at the Royal Marsden in Sutton for which I’m eternally grateful.

Since my early ideas for CBN long before we ever launched, he has given us his wholehearted support. He has shown a keen interest in everything we’ve been doing and takes every opportunity to help spread the word among colleagues and patients alike.

We would like to thank Ian so much for believing in us, and becoming our most eminent Patron!

Biography

Professor Ian Smith is Professor of Cancer Medicine at The Royal Marsden and The Institute of Cancer Research. He is also Head of the Breast Unit at The Royal Marsden.

Professor Smith trained in Edinburgh and at Harvard before coming to work at The Royal Marsden where he has spent many years specialising in the medical treatment of breast cancer and, until recently, lung cancer. He sees patients mainly at the hospital's Chelsea site but he also works at the Sutton site.

His main interests are in the development of new treatments for breast cancer, particularly in its early stages, and he has pioneered the use of pre-operative medical treatment before surgery for large breast cancers.

Professor Smith is a past Chairman of the Association of Cancer Physicians and of the UK National Cancer Research Institute Lung Cancer Group. He is on the steering committees of several major international clinical research trials and has recently been closely involved in the development of Herceptin for early breast cancer. He has published over 350 research papers and lectures widely around the world.
