I was near Franz Joseph glacier, in New Zealand when I found out that my mum had been diagnosed with cancer.

I had decided to call mum even though I’d been a bit slack in keeping in contact over the past 5 months of travelling. She said that I must be psychic for calling on that day and was I sitting down. I said I wasn’t as I was in a phone booth and she told me she had found a lump in her breast and been told it was malignant that day.

I went back to my friend and spilled my tea everywhere but didn’t tell her what mum had told me even though we had been best friends since school. I was very upset and in shock, but did end up telling Neety later in the day and we looked at a couple of websites to find out some information.

Over the following weeks I also felt extreme guilt because I was on the other side of the world and my plans were to work in Australia for a year. All I could think was that she had done everything for me as I grew up and I should go straight back there. My dad, sister and mum all said things were fine and I really didn’t need to come back but I still felt very guilty. In the end I stayed in Australia for 3 months and came back as mum was going into hospital after completing her course of chemo.
