Colin, husband
It’s cancer - everything in our world seemed to collapse from that moment. It seems like a dream now: I was sitting in the hospital waiting room when a nurse came up to me and said that my wife needed to see me in a room down the corridor. This was confusing as it was not the room she went into some time ago. However, I went along. Jan was lying there looking pale and vulnerable next to a lady I had not seen before. “It’s cancer”, Jan said. Everything in our world seemed to collapse from that moment.
The dream was a reality.
As the treatment progressed, I often had the feeling of looking from the sidelines. We kept saying to each other that the support mechanisms for partners didn’t really exist, which is true even now. That’s why Cancer Buddies Network is being launched, for everyone whose heads are in a whirl and are looking for help, support, comfort, kind words, any words, whatever. If it had been around when our world caved in, the journey for me would have been much easier. |
